The fund purchased PAL devices for the NICU in 2015 based on highly successful trials other hospitals have experienced with these devices. The PAL device provides the baby with reinforcement for non-nutritive sucking which assists the feeding rate of poor feeders (especially premature infants).
During 2016, the NICU at Nicklaus Children's Hospital performed their own trial and achieved a 75% success rate on the trial patients. The device provided the babies with a more successful transition to bottle feeding and breast feeding.
